The Rising Popularity of the Trend

In home interior design today, one of the hottest trends is what is known as the Modern Farmhouse look. It takes the classic farmhouse style, a more country and rustic look, and combines it with sleek, modern touches throughout.

I don’t think anything brought this theme to the forefront better than the beautiful home makeovers done by Chip and Joanna Gains, as seen on the hit HGTV series, Fixer Upper. The couple seemed to always find the perfect home in need of a little (or a lot) of TLC and give it just that. With Chip’s construction ability, and Joanna’s keen interior design eye, they would turn what was once a home that not many would care to live in, into a gorgeous masterpiece that is welcoming and a delight to call home.

By finding a way to mix together the perfect elements of country and modern touches, they were able to create a decorating style that is now one of the most trending interior design styles of 2020.

Add Sleek Touches with Worn Distressed Furniture

Creating an eye pleasing modern farmhouse theme is actually easy to achieve, and at times it can be easy on the budget too.

For example, if redoing a dining area, instead of looking for the most elegant and beautiful high-end table with matching chairs, save money and get creative. You can take a simple table with clean lines, possibly one found at a second hand store. Or, if you’re lucky, you may find one in good condition and solidly built at a yard sale, that maybe someone is selling because they don’t realize the potential it has.

Simply take a table like that and paint it with high quality furniture paint in a finish like matte black, matte white, or maybe a matte grayish green. Even navy blue makes the perfect farmhouse style table color that goes with almost everything. After painting, take some fine grit sand paper and lightly scourer it in a few areas so the old finish bleeds through just a bit. Afterwards, you’ll have a beautiful farmhouse dining table that looks like has evolved with time. Like a fine wine, it has now become better with age.

The chairs need not be a perfect match to the table. Make sure you find good solid chairs that sit comfortably and do not wobble (no one likes sitting in a wobbly chair). If they are already in a low sheen country white color you'll have a perfect color to pair them with your newly painted table painted pale green or navy blue. In such case you got lucky. If not, break out the paint and let your creativity flow. The chairs can be made of wood or, for this décor style, even industrial styled metal chairs with a wooden seating surface work nicely. Just be sure the color is complementary to the table finish.

In short, when doing a table and chairs for a farmhouse decorating theme, don’t be so matchy matchy with things, and get creative. Bring different in design elements to create an interesting look that all works together.

Hang interesting looking plates and such on the walls, and then bring it all together with a modern drum style pendant/chandelier. You may surprise yourself on how well the mix of these different design elements flow together to create your masterpiece.

If you prefer a ceiling an in place of the chandelier, that is even better. But, to create modern farmhouse décor, don't buy an old fashioned fan. Make it modern instead. The table and chairs you creatively painted have already given the country look, so now you need the modern touch of a sleek fan to provide the light and the airflow.

Nothing Beats a Comfy Bedroom with a Really Cool Ceiling Fan

When deciding what is good for the bedroom, you’ll want a cozy atmosphere without the clutter. Keep it simple. Keep it minimalistic.

Take natural elements and clean lines, and bring them together. A bed with simple lines in a barnwood finish is a nice touch.

Instead, using a wrought iron mirror above the dresser can be a great addition. Just don’t go with fancy scrolls and accents on the mirror. Keep the lines clean and simple and let the dark iron color of the frame be the dominate design element.
